The story of Nick Vujicic- You are what you decide to be!
How hard is it to go about your daily life when you injure your hands or legs? You can’t wait for it to heal, right? Then imagine a life where you have neither hands nor legs- you can’t hold anything, touch anything, hug your parents, or walk, run or dance.
Nick Vujicic was born in December 4, 1982 in Melbourne, Australia with “phocomelia”, a rare congenital disorder that means he didn’t have hands or legs. Nobody in their family had ever even heard of such a condition and his mother could not even make herself see or hold him at first. Nick was the first specially-abled child who was allowed to attend a regular school in Australia. But he really struggled in school as he was constantly bullied and was laughed at by the other kids. His self-esteem took a big hit due to constant harassment and he was depressed and broken. A ten-year-old Nick even decided take his own life because he had given up. But his mother showed him a newspaper clipping of a man who lived happily with his disability, which was a turning point in Nick’s life.
War against the notion of Impossible
He realized his life could be a perfect inspiration for others. After having a surgery to defuse the two toes in his small, deformed feet, Nick trained himself to use them to grab, write, shave and even swim. At the age of 17, he started speaking to people and sharing his story at prayer groups. He spoke of his strong belief in Christ and how his faith imparted strength to him. Now he has toured over 57 countries and has spoken to over 6 million people. Nick graduated from Griffith University with a double major in finance and accounting.
Nick is also the author of several popular books and is the CEO of the non-profit organization Life without Limbs. He moved to USA and is married to Kanae Miyahara and is the father of four kids.
Valuable takeaways from Nick Vujicic’s life
We become discouraged and upset when we face simple setbacks in life. We tend to give up when things don’t go our way. Nick Vujicic should be a role model for all of us. Amidst all the obstacles life threw at him, he never stopped trying. And through his hard work, he succeeded in life. He acquired skills such as swimming that a lot of people with all four limbs have difficulty in mastering.
Thus, we should not let adversities knock us down. We should get back up and move forward. Everybody faces difficulties in life; what matters is our attitude towards it. Instead of thinking up excuses to stop doing something, be motivated to keep trying. When we feel like giving up, we should look at people like Nick, who, despite having a severe disadvantage, is still marching ahead.
